Idan Raichel: Piano Songs

After 15 years as leader of The Idan Raichel Project, international music icon Idan Raichel is focusing on the basic essence of his songs with the solo piano concert entitled Idan Raichel – Piano – Songs. Raichel will be presenting his melodies, lyrics and the stories behind them in their pure, stripped down form, as they were originally written at home or in the studio. This intimate and inspiring show allows Raichel to demonstrate his gifts as a singer-songwriter and endearing solo stage presence. Discover anew the songs that have earned him fans such as American pop stars India.Arie and Alicia Keys, Portugal’s Ana Moura, France’s Patrick Bruel, Italy’s Ornella Vanoni, Germany’s Andreas Scholl, and Mali’s Vieux Farka Touré to name but a few.

Fanfare Ciocărlia

Fanfare Ciocărlia, the Romanian kings of Balkan brass, are best known for high-energy performances with complex rhythms and their uniquely Eastern European tone.  Making their Luckman stage debut, the admired ensemble will play selections from their greatest hits and mark their 20th year of making music.

Globalfest on the road: Creole Carnival

globalFEST, one of the most dynamic global music platforms in North America, takes their showcase on the road for the first time with Creole Carnival! This ensemble celebrates the crossroads of African musical currents and their intersection with the sounds of the Caribbean and Latin America revolving around the annual Carnival festivities. Featuring Casuarina from Brazil, Emeline Michel from Haiti, and Brushy One String from Jamaica.

Acoustic Africa: Habib Koité and Vusi Mahlasela

Two of Africa’s most celebrated musicians, Habib Koité and Vusi Mahlasela, join forces on the Luckman stage with the latest iteration of the celebrated Acoustic Africa series. A modern troubadour with diverse appeal, Habib Koite’s musicianship, wit, and wisdom are extraordinary. Vusi Mahlasela, celebrated for his distinct style and poetic lyrics, is simply known as “The Voice” in his home-country of South Africa.

Bharat Caravan

David Orlowsky

With inspirations drawn from the Jewish shtetls in Eastern Europe, the David Orlowsky’s The Soul of Klezmer, is a masterful expansion of the Klezmer folk music tradition. His adaptations and original compositions push creative boundaries offering a unique blend of folk tunes on the clarinet and strings.  Clarinetist David Orlowsky brings a full arsenal of carefully crafted compositions self coined as “world chamber music.”

Seu Jorge

Raw and soulful, acclaimed Brazilian singer, songwriter, and musician Seu Jorge’s works draw from his childhood experience navigating a favela outside of Rio de Janeiro. His melodies are stripped and untainted fusing classic American and European soul music with psychedelic samba. Best known for his contributions to the soundtrack for the film A Life Aquatic and for his portrayal in the celebrated film City of God – which drew worldwide attention to the modern reality of poverty and life in the slums – Seu Jorge is an icon in the making.

Luckman Jazz Orchestra Combo Session

The Los Angeles Times calls the Luckman Jazz Orchestra “one of the country’s finest musical organizations.” Under the direction of Charles Owens, the Luckman Jazz Orchestra has performed numerous concerts honoring jazz masters and has been joined on stage by some of the greatest living jazz vocalists today, including Dianne Reeves, Carmen Lundy, and Barbara Morrison. The orchestra was selected as an official cultural ambassador for Los Angeles and represented the city across the country and abroad in Sao Paolo and Berlin. This year, the LJO will present an intimate small combo session of jazz in its purest form.
