Raiford Rogers Modern Ballet

Still Life

Information

Hailed by the Los Angeles Times as “bracingly contemporary,” Raiford Rogers Modern Ballet is an inspiring ensemble of dancers that breaks the traditional mold and reinvigorates this classic medium. The cutting-edge company returns to the Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State L.A. to perform the world premiere of Still Life set to an original score by acclaimed Czech composer Zbynek Mateju. The work also will be performed at the National Theater in Prague in October. Zbynek Mateju is one of the most prolific Czech composers of his generation, known mainly for his collaborative works in ballet, opera, musical theatre, and film. His extensive repertoire includes major works for orchestra and chamber music. Mr. Mateju is the recipient of numerous international honors for composition including the UNESCO Prize, the Donauballet International Composer’s Competitio, and the Prix Radio Bohemia. He is celebrated for his wide-ranging musical oeuvre.

Mateju was awarded prestigious commissions from the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, the Bayreuth Festival, the National Theatre Prague, the Schloss Kirchstetten Festival, the State Opera Prague, the National Theatre Brno, and the Holland Dance Festival for Martin Muller’s ballet The Secret Life for the Nederlands Dans Theater. Mr. Mateju held the position of Director of the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra. Raiford Rogers’ Schubert’s Silence, set to Franz Schubert’s Piano Sonata No. 18 “Fantasie” in G major, will complete the program.
