The National Gugak Center, Korea’s premier institution for traditional performing arts, is coming to The Luckman with Korean Soundscape: The Pulse of Gugak.
This special performance showcases the beauty, energy, and spirit of Korean culture through traditional music and dance. Presented by the Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles (KCCLA), the evening features the dance company and folk music ensemble of the Seoul-based National Gugak Center, moving from refined, centuries-old dances to the lively, improvisational energy of Korean folk music.
The program will include:
– Hunryeongmu (훈령무): A commanding dance built on disciplined motion and powerful formations.
– Sanjo Dance (산조춤): An expressive dance shaped by the melodies and rhythms of traditional Korean instrumental music.
– Hallyangmu (한량무): A graceful, playful dance portraying the charm and wit of a carefree Korean gentleman.
– Sinawi (시나위): An exciting musical conversation in which musicians respond to one another through spontaneous improvisation.
– Pansori (판소리): A uniquely Korean storytelling tradition combining powerful vocals, expressive gestures, and rhythmic drumming.
– Arirang Medley (아리랑): A celebration of one of Korea’s most beloved folk songs, exploring its many regional variations and musical interpretations.
The evening concludes with the grand finale, Pangut with Sogo and Drum Dance (판굿), which brings together dynamic percussion, spirited dancing, and theatrical performance to capture the communal spirit at the heart of Korean folk traditions.
